Ask a Lawyer: Do I have any rights to help me?

Question:

I was married by law on May 11, 1996 in Connecticut and married again by church on May 14, 1997 in Florida. Now in May of 2007 my husband has left me, quit his job and has taken all the money. I have not worked since January 2006 because he said he would take care of me. At this point, I have no money, no job prospects and a 9 year old son who needs medication. We have no health insurance since my husband quit his job. I do not have any money to hire a lawyer. Are there any laws I can use to get some help?

Answer:

I am not licensed in North Carolina. I recommend that you consult an attorney in your state to determine the exact procedure for filing a divorce. Although you do not say you are ready to file for divorce in your question I will assume that is the next step you will want to take. If you and your husband have a child together, he will have an obligation to support your child. He may or may not have an obligation to support you. Some states do allow for spousal support. The length, amount and basis for support will vary from state to state. A divorce will also divide all the assets and liabilities of the marriage.
