Retirement

Question: My wife and I haven't lived together for 12 years, she is a Dentist but will not work as a Dentist and will not work full time in the job she has, my only retirement is Civil Service retirement and her retirement is Social Security. I understand that I have to give up 50% of my retirement, but I get no portion of her Social Security retirement. I earn twice as much as she does, but she will earn more than I do in retirement. Can a percentage of my Civil Service retirement be set aside to compensate for the fact I have no Social Security that would be equivalent to what I would have had in Social Security had I been in the private sector?

Answer: If you have been married in excess of 10 years, then you are qualified to receive spouse benefits from social security. You would check with the Social Security Administration to further understand your rights and the amounts of the same.
