I have been paying back child support to Jefferson County Department of Child Support Services in Birmingham, Alabama for about seven or eight years. The principle on the judgement is approximately $7,000 however, the interest is over $20,000. This amount is showing up on my credit report as if I owe $30,000 in back child support. Is there something that I can do to change the interest rate or alleviate it all together? I pay $500 a month and have done so for many years however, it seems like the debt never decreases.

Allow me to preface my response with the disclaimer that I am not licensed in the State of Alabama. In most states the interest is statutory, meaning provided for in the law so you will prabably not be able to change or elimiate it. However, contact the child support department and ask for a history fo payments and interest. You should be able to verify that all of the payments are being applied and see the progress of the payoff.
