divorce financial planningBy Steve Unger

Special to DadsDivorce.com

Are you thinking about getting a divorce? If so, have you made any long-term financial plans?

Many people in bad marriages simply focus on getting past the legal divorce process and then moving on, but you need to prepare for what comes after that.

Your post-divorce lifestyle is naturally going to be very different, especially if you had a two-income marriage. You may suddenly face the need to support two homes, two sets of insurance policies, and many other additional financial burdens.

You’ll need to adapt to those new issues quickly, and if you have joint custody of your children, it can get even more complicated.

St. Louis divorce lawyerQuestion:

Is therapy for child considered a medical procedure that both parents should reach a decision on?

My ex-wife has taken our child to therapy sessions without my consent. My understanding is that any medical "procedure" needs to be agreed upon by both parties.

Is my child's therapy session considered a medical procedure?

moving away with kidsQuestion:

I have joint custody of our child, though our child custody agreement states my ex-wife has primary custody with me having secondary.

My daughter told me that she might be moving and joining another school district, but my ex-wife has not notified me of any plans to move.

What steps should I take to ensure that the current custody schedule stays the status quo and my ex-wife is not allowed to move my child into another school district?

St. Louis divorce lawyerQuestion:

My wife and I in a separation period, though still legally married. My wife and her mother (my mother-in-law) are trying to change my son’s school district, presumably closer to my wife so she would have a better chance at getting custody.

My wife is also planning on giving her mother power of attorney so that she will have the right to review and determine our child's education.

Can she give her mother power of attorney without my consent and then move my son to another school district?

Houston Divorce LawyerQuestion:

We share joint physical custody almost 50/50, but my ex is listed as the primary custodial parent simply because she works from home.

Because she is listed as the primary parent, I am obligated to pay child support yet the child support calculations did not account for her salary. Is this correct?

Also, if we are splitting parenting time why is it that I am obligated to pay child support simply because of a technicality that we had to list one parent as "primary"?
