Question:
My ex-father-in-law is rather wealthy and has been bailing my ex-wife out of all her troubles since she could walk. Now that we are divoricing he once again is coming to her aid. I have been poor all my life and have just recently (1 week post filing) landed a good job, but still can't afford an attorney. I can't stop him from paying her attorney fees, but if I could have him restricted from the court room it would force her to stand on her own, bettering my chances greatly. Is there any rules or procedures I could call upon?
Answer:
First let me say I am not licensed to practice law in Missouri. The law and trial rules will vary from state to state. Most court proceedings are open to the public. However, some family related proceedings may be closed. Usually, these are adoptions, paternity or guardianship proceedings. This will be different in every state and may even differ by county or judge. If your father-in-law is going to be a witness at trial, you can ask for separation of witnesses. If the judge grants this request he would have to remain outside the courtroom until after he testifies.
