Divorce Lawyer Joe CordellDadsDivorce.com founder Joseph Cordell appeared on "The Tom Sullivan Show" to discuss how child custody battles are being heavily influenced by family law judges' biases toward divorced dads.

"One purpose of the law is to protect us from those leanings of individual judges, but once you give a judge such a wide range of discretion and decision-making then it invites that sort of bias," Cordell said on the Fox News Radio show. "Historically, it has not worked in the favor of guys."

In divorce court, more than any other area of the law, judges have a huge amount of discretion so there’s a lot of opportunity for biases and particular preferences that all human beings have that come into play, Cordell said.

family pet divorceBy Tara Lynne Groth

Requests for advice on divorce typically start with the heavy hitters (child custody, division of assets, etc.), but not much further down the list are questions about the family pet.

Though you probably treat your pet with the same love as you would a person, in most states pets are regarded as property. (Read our related divorce article "Who Gets The Family Pet?")

If a pet was acquired before the marriage they remain the property of the spouse who purchased him/her.

Pennsylvania is one such state that sees a dog more or less as a piece of furniture; the state does not acknowledge shared custody agreements because those arrangements are not enforceable for property.

However, not all states see family pets as just another piece of property sprinkled in amidst a laundry list of furniture.

Child custody agreements are top priorities for divorcing parents.

But what divorce advice is out there when it comes to dealing "man’s best friend" and custody laws? Who is responsible for vet bills, food costs and care for the family pet?

According to 2011 reports from the American Pet Products Association, Americans' pet care spending is over $54 billion. With dogs and cats treated like members of the family in most homes, and kids' attachments to their pets strong, conflicts arise over where cats and dogs should reside.

Family law attorneys will tell you that the pets usually go with the kids in order to create a sense of continuity for the children.

There are several different types of family law professionals you can request be appointed for your child custody case.
