Mens divorce lawyerQuestion:

I have lived in Texas for the past 20 years but recently had to leave the state for a 10-month period. I returned last month, but I would like to know if my time out of state means I don't meet the residency requirement to file for divorce in Texas?

I believe you have to be a resident of the state for 6 months to file for divorce. Do my 20 years of living in the state county or will I have to start over the 6-month period from the time I returned from out of state?

Mens divorce lawyerQuestion:

My wife and I are headed toward divorce. We have been married for 9 years. It is my understanding that spousal maintenance can be awarded if the marriage has lasted for 10 years or more.

Does the court recognize the petition date as the end of the marriage or would the divorce need to be final before our 10th anniversary in order to ensure I would not need to pay alimony?

Cordell & Cordell’s growing domestic litigation practice focusing on men’s divorce has expanded to Houston and caught the attention of the Houston Business Journal.

The HBJ wrote an article about how the family law firm is giving Houston men considering divorce another option when it comes to legal representation. (Note: you must be a paid subscriber to read the story in its entirety.)

Question:

I have been out of the house for 3 months. I signed temp orders so I could see my kids. My wife refuses to let me have my belongings and access to personal finance files. She filed and we lived together for 7 months before I found out. My attorney states that we have to wait until it is final to get my things. Is this the way it is in Texas? What happens if I change lawyers?

Answer:

I am not licensed in Texas. I doubt changing lawyers will change the law. You may seek an order allowing you to remove personal belongings but a final distribution of property is determined at final hearing.

Jason BowmanQuestion: I pay child support to my ex-wife in Texas. I recently moved from Texas to California for a job. I am on community supervision for a contempt charge for failure to pay child support in the past.

This year, I have continued paying child support but got behind on medical reimbursement. If they revoke my community supervision, a warrant will be issued for my arrest. I am trying to pay what I owe, but have been unable.

If a warrant is issued, will they come to California to arrest me?
