For divorced dads, what better way than the holiday season to take time and reflect about all of the things that we are grateful for?

Of course, we don’t need a holiday reminding us to be thankful but it sure is a great excuse to take some time to smell the roses. It is when we are able to show gratitude that we find ourselves feeling a little happier.

It is so easy during difficult times, to focus on what is missing from one’s life. There is a major difference between happy and unhappy people.

dating after divorceBy Lisa S. Brown

Love is a wonderful feeling that two people can share together, but when looking for advice on divorce, how does one decide when it is right to love again after a painful divorce?

There are exceptions but in most cases it is strongly encouraged that people wait at least a year after the divorce is final to engage in a serious relationship. Why is this?

The main reason for allowing some time to heal is that it is easy to fall into the "rebound" trap after the marriage is over. Rebound relationships can stall or even prevent one’s full recovery.

"Drugs do not make us happy, people do." - William Glasser

If I have learned anything during my lifetime is that we need people!

We were not put on this earth to function completely independent. We need a support system of some kind in order to truly flourish as human beings.

This is never more true than when divorced dads are trying to deal with a cataclysmic shift in their lives, such as divorce.

divorce recoveryBy Lisa S. Brown

When it comes to seeking help or obtaining professional counseling services it seems that divorced dads have a more difficult time doing so then women.

It is obvious of course to why this is, as so many men were socialized as children to believe that crying or showing emotion was feminine or worse yet, weak.

"Crying is for babies" or "be a man" are terms that have been coined in many households.

Unfortunately as a society men are expected to be tough and immune to emotion. The reality is that men have feelings just as women do, and they should be encouraged to deal with the pain and wide array of emotions that accompany divorce.
