the today show dadsdivorce.com"The Today Show" on NBC used DadsDivorce.com as one of its sources in a recent article on the rise of Facebook-related divorces.

While we at DadsDivorce.com and the Cordell & Cordell divorce lawyers always caution divorced dads to be careful of what information they put online, the article mentions our stance that Facebook should not be solely blamed for ruining a marriage.

The Today Show website writes:

divorce lawyer Daniel LambertQuestion:

After we filed for divorce, I accessed my wife's email and Facebook passwords that were available on our shared computer.

I posed as her and posted on her Facebook that she cheated on me and left me and is only getting a divorce to get my money. She found out, changed her password, and now I can't remove those posts.

I didn't know this could potentially be a crime until later. Could I be in trouble if she were to pursue charges against me for what she is calling Facebook hacking?

You’ll often hear about Facebook and other social networking websites being a foe in your divorce and child custody case, but there are times when these social outlets can also be your friend.

We all have mistakes and regrets in our past that we wish to forget and delete from memory. Before Facebook, these missteps would only be remembered by a small circle of people and they were rarely documented for the public.

But social networking websites allow our transgressions – including those of our spouses - to become public knowledge that can be used in court.

facebook divorceDivorce lawyers realize it’s easy in our social networking gluttony for people to use their computer keyboard to rant about their case online.

That’s why attorneys Joseph Cordell and Kristin Zurek are warning clients to stay off Facebook and other social media.

"Our average person could not afford to hire a private detective to run around willy-nilly in the hope that over several days he might stumble upon something," Cordell told the St. Charles Suburban Journal. "Now you have a relatively low-paid clerk who is a crack user of the Internet. They can go in and find things that even the lawyers can't find."

A recent child custody battle with a unique Facebook twist once again has divorce lawyers warning clients about the perils of using social networks when going through a divorce.

In this instance, an Indiana woman created a fake profile of a 17-year-old girl on Facebook to get information out of her ex-husband.

The only problem was her ex was a step ahead of her, though his gamble was far too risky to warrant his actions, according to two Cordell & Cordell divorce attorneys.
