Pack up the Essentials

Many single dads would probably agree that packing for any type of trip is among the most underrated of annoyances. Turns out that women tend to be far more skilled at this task than we are. It would be nice if you could get help from a female companion, but this burden may fall on your shoulders so be prepared and make sure you don’t leave the essentials at home.

When packing, be sure to bring along items that are appropriate for the climate. We’re potentially talking intense heat here so light clothing, swimming gear, and sunscreen should probably be included in your travel bags. If your vacation calls for a fair amount of walking, be sure that everyone has a comfortable pair of shoes on hand. Last but not least, make sure the kids are stocked up with mp3 players, portable gaming devices, and other forms of entertainment should boredom strike.

Don’t Let the Magic Slip Away

Summer trips are intended to serve as an escape from the real world, but it is not uncommon to feel the need to vacate from your vacation, if that makes any sense. Even the most relaxing destination gets a little stale after a while, and energetic kids can wear you out so fast that you actually look forward to diving back into the work load.

The good thing is that there are plenty of stimulating aids you can bring along to combat the occasional wave of summer vacation blues. A good book is great when laying out on the beach, but don’t forget to think along the lines of activities you can all partake in. A deck of cards, a set of dominoes, or board games can add to the bonding experience and help keep the trip exciting for everyone.

Kick All Outside Distractions to the Curb

I don’t know about you guys, but I find it very difficult to cut ties with work-related activities when on vacation. It gets really tempting when I’m vacationing at my Ma’s house in Vegas where computers are so abundant. When it comes to a summer vacation with the kids, though, it’s best to leave your work at home.

All the e-mails, newsletters, and updates you anticipate will be there waiting upon your return. With any luck, they will still be relevant when you finally do get around to them. I have found that summer vacations in tropical, beach settings work wonders in the fight against temptation. Whatever the destination, relax and show your kids you are ready to kick back and have a blast. I’m sure you all deserve it.

Enjoy Yourselves

A summer vacation can be very stressful if you let it get the best of you. After all, it is often insanely hot, and being stranded with even your own kids for long periods of time could leave you craving adult companionship.

A couple of aspirin tablets and cocktails may be required to take the edge off, but I think you will find that the bonding aspect makes it all a worthwhile experience. I may have left some things out, but if you keep just some of this in mind, you will be well on your way to a terrific summer vacation!
